Kirk started his career in 2007 as a redshirt. The next year, he was Brian Hoyer’s backup quarterback, appearing in five games and throwing for 310 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He defeated colleague Keith Nicole in 2009 to take the starting quarterback position, and in 12 games, he led the team with 19 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and 2680 passing yards. In 2010, the team shared the Big Ten Championship. He was chosen Second Team All-Big Ten by the coaches after participating in the first-ever Big Ten championship game.
